Join our Global Running Team- improve lives locally and globally
This May, Ethiopia comes to Belfast as Simon Haile from Tearfund partner Kale Heywet in Ethiopia runs the Belfast Marathon, alongside public figures like Bishop Harold Miller, former Presbyterian Moderator Stafford Carson and New Wine’s David McClay.
We hope many of you will join them in the relay section or take on the challenge of the Marathon Walk, Fun Run, Wheelchair Marathon or even the whole race?
Together, we hope to raise £10,000 to help Ethiopian churches establish small-scale loan schemes to benefit more than 5,000 people in rural communities. The self- help groups enable people to save money and set up businesses that transforms family welfare as income and hope grows. People like Thhuy, a lady who with a small loan of £30 was able to buy 2 stoves and bake bread to sell to local restaurants and in street markets to create an income to sustain her family.
Special commission Service
This year on Sunday 1 May, Willowfield Parish on the Woodstock Road, East Belfast will be hosting Simon Haile from Kale Heywet at a special commissioning service for the runners at 7.00pm. Simon will be sharing stories of how the self-help groups are making a real difference for families and communities. You are most welcome to attend and be part of the service and have your photograph taken with Simon for your church notice board.
Marathon Day Reception with Simon Haile
Also, on Monday 2 May, Tearfund will be hosting a special reception with Simon. The reception will run from 12.30-2.30pm at Ravenhill Presbyterian church. Come and bring a lunch and we will provide a refreshing drink and hear Simon share a 10 minute presentation on the work of Kale Heywet at 1.15 and 2.15pm. You are invited to come to a session time that suits you and be inspired by the stories he will share. There will be an opportunity in between to have a photograph taken with Simon for your church notice board too!
Closing date for early entries is 25 March. If you’d like to get involved please do the following:
1. Register a team at www.belfastcitymarathon.com
2. Email us at us at email@example.com to let us know you’ve done that and we’ll then send you and information pack and sponsorship forms.
Last year Ballynure Presbyterian church entered 6 relay teams and raised £1443 for the Haiti appeal. Team leader, Christine Murray said, “everyone involved rose to the challenge, had lots of fun and gained great satisfaction knowing that the money would be used wisely to help rebuild lives and livelihoods that were left so devastated by the earthquake.”
You could be one of those satisfied runners this year helping bring hope in Ethiopia!
